Charles Moore is a New York-based art critic, curator, and published author who primarily examines the representation and impact of Black cultural expression, color theory, abstraction expressionism, borderless curatorial engagement and dialogue with artists. Though sensitive ideological territory, Moore treads it extensively and confidently. His perspectives on art are both scholarly and exhaustively researched, diving into the artists’ personal processes, worldviews, and instincts as well as their historical and social milieu. This multi-faceted approach infuses his writing with a vibrancy that transports it away from any ivory tower or walled garden, and plants it squarely in the center of current discourse.
With a fecundity driven by passion and curiosity, Moore writes about art and artists in multiple forms: books, art exhibition reviews, essays for shows and catalogs, exhibition statements, interviews. In his penetrating but captivating style, he invites an audience of connoisseurs and art-curious alike.
Moore was inspired to start writing books on art collecting when he saw that much of the existing literature spoke exclusively to vintage collectors, potentially alienating novices in the field. So he made accessible art collecting his first point of entry, adopting what has come to be his signature style—one that upholds the intellectual rigor and sensitivity required of the profession, without bowing to elitism.
He has curated dozens of exhibitions in the USA, Mexico, Colombia, Netherlands, Italy, France, Romania, and Germany, moving further and further afield.
Moore continues to keep abreast of developments in the art world by having ongoing interviews with established and up-coming artists all over the world. The list is as far-flung as George Condo, Derrick Adams, Rusudan Khizanishvili, Katharina Grosse, Nari Ward, Bosco Sodi, Adam Pendleton, Guan Xiao, Adrian Ghenie, Julian Opie, Howardena Pindell, and Jorinde Voigt. With a remarkable flair for drawing out his subjects, Moore is able to offer intimate glimpses of their lives and approaches to art and society rarely seen elsewhere. In an interview with George Condo, for instance, Moore takes the shift from the sublime to the banal in his stride. The discussion kicks off with Condo rejecting the notion of art history as linear—that multiple art movements can be embodied in a single work—while in the next breath, extolling the virtues of working at Home Depot!
Moore is not only passionate about his interests, he is energetic. During his residency at The Betsy Hotel, he conducted a no-holdsbarred art-talk marathon that went from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 a.m. the next day as he engaged with 24 artists, curators, museum directors, musicians, and collectors from around the world, on zero sleep. The experience is captured in his upcoming book 24 Hours Interview, published by Mousse
Moore has a master’s degree in Museum Studies from Harvard University, and is currently a doctoral candidate at Columbia University, researching the life and career of abstract painter Ed Clark.
